Baldwin III of Jerusalem (r. 1143–1163) was a capable and energetic ruler who brought stability to the Kingdom of Jerusalem after a period of internal division, asserting full royal authority following a power struggle with his mother, Melisende. He is best known for the capture of Ascalon in 1153, a major strategic victory that secured the southern frontier and strengthened the kingdom’s position against its rivals.
