During the mid-1st century BC, the Suessiones were among the most powerful Belgic tribes, forming a major component of the anti-Roman coalition that confronted Caesar in 57 BC. After the rapid siege of their capital, Noviodunum, they submitted to Rome, providing hostages—including the king’s own sons—and thereafter existed under the close oversight of the pro-Roman Remi.
