The Principality of Antioch, founded in 1098 during the First Crusade, became a major crusader state in the Levant, renowned for its strategic location, fortified cities, and cultural exchanges between Latin, Byzantine, and Eastern influences. Raymond of Poitiers, who ruled as Prince from 1136 to 1149, was a skilled diplomat and military leader. He strengthened Antioch through strategic alliances, most notably his marriage to Constance of Antioch, and worked to expand its influence despite ongoing tensions with the Byzantine Empire and neighboring Muslim states. However, the principality faced constant threats, and Raymond’s death at the Battle of Inab in 1149 marked the beginning of its gradual decline.
