This issue commemorates the emperor’s seventh official largess (Liberalitas VII), a direct cash distribution granted to the Roman populace around 153 AD. The payout was issued to celebrate Antoninus Pius’ Quindecennalia, marking the successful fifteenth anniversary of his reign. Unlike many common issues where Liberalitas just stands holding a cornucopia, the reverse of RIC 228 features a more active scene: Liberalitas is actively emptying the coins out of her cornucopia.
